As a Tamilian i am forced to write this post, This ain’t my usual poetry or literature, so kindly ignore any grammatical mistake… As Tamilians and citizens of India, we are deeply hurt by this Jallikattu issue… Millions of people are gathered in Marina beach, Chennai because Jallikattu is our tradition, it is our culture… it is in our blood, it is being practised for 10k years (This number might stun you, but then we have carbon dated proofs ). How can we let it go? When Supreme Court passed a verdict to ban Jallikattu hearing the Plea from PETA an American NGO,. as Indians we felt we were let down!
North Indian Medias doesn’t pay much attention to this issue, not only to this issue, but any Tamil issue for that matter… When a soldier is killed in the border, he is termed as an ‘Indian Soldier’ , but when a fisherman from Tamil Nadu is killed by Srilankan Navy, The headline would be, ‘Tamil Fisherman is killed’ , ain’t he a fisherman from India? ain’t he your brother? Will they dare to write or read ‘A punjabi Soldier is dead?’ This is just one example… There are plenty!
The protest which is happening is for Jallikattu, but then that is only a spark. This is an emotional outburst of all the depression, suppression & anxiety, buried deeply in our hearts & minds for decades…
Am not here to explain why Jallikattu is not an animal cruelty, there are thousands of videos & Articles to explain it. But I am here to make my non Tamil speaking friends to understand our plight. We wanted to be in India, scream for Dhoni & Kohli, but if this trend continues, then we are afraid we ll lose our Indian identity. We lost our trust on North Indian medias, but we believe our North Indian friends, that’s because all the North Indian friends who reside in Tamil Nadu are participating in the protest…
Finally, I request all my friends to spread our sentiments to all your friends, this should be a national protest, We can’t watch an American NGO come to our soil and dictate what to do in India! Friends we came to Delhi when Anna Hazare protested. Now, we request you to come to chennai, Please give your shoulders, we need you!! Vazhga Tamil, Jai Hind!!!

As a tamizhan I’m with you.I’m so happy to read a post on this.I wanted to write about jallikattu but I really don’t have time now.I hope I get time to write something on this. And yes we are Indians first. But in north they do differentiate us which is really heart breaking.even during chennai floods when people are dying media telecasted about pollution in delhi.I don’t say that’s not an issue but they do have much more time to discuss on this.At least now they are showing about jallikattu.happy to see

Yes they are showing but only after millions of people gathered… and they don’t have an option, else they will lose their TRP.. but I want non Tamil speaking Indians to understand our plight and spread this among their friends & families. Thanks for your comments and encouragement, சகோதரி, தங்கள் உணர்வை மதிக்கிறேன்🙏🏻வாழ்க தமிழ்…

Yes I agree.they didn’t have an option as people gathered in large numbers. It’s time for a change. It will take time for others to understand as the game is mainly portrayed as animal cruelty.there is no cruelty at all.let’s give them some time to understand this.

After having read your post, I went ahead and read several articles on this. I don’t see anything wrong in the practice, except if it’s done humanely. Soemthing could have been done about the way they are bred and led to the field, instead of banning the practice. But one MUST ensure that the bulls are treated well. Afterall they’re there for our entertainment and tradition. I’m sorry if this upsets you in some way. But this is how I feel from an outsiders opinion. 😊

Yes pradita.one must ensure bulls are treated well. It’s been always treated well.some people always break rules just like how even gambling and betting is there in cricket.only the law breakers should be punished and a sport shouldn’t be banned. And there is no cruelty like how they portray.I really appreciate how you googled to know more about the sport.

Yes your point is hundred percent true and we agree… but I wanted to convey something here..
This particular breed of bull, which plays Jallikattu, called as ‘Kaangeyan Kaalai’ is a family member of every farmer who participate in the ‘sport’ Jallikattu. Sometimes these farmers don’t attend their relative’s marriage, the reason being they don’t wanna leave the bull alone at home and they stay back to feed them… These bulls grow as a family member. Farmers are very emotionally attached to them, how will they let their bulls to be tortured..
Yes I did see few videos like applying chilli powders, biting tails.. we agree that is wrong, but those incidents are very rare cases, let the court monitor the play, if something goes wrong let them take those involved in such acts to custody.. but banning the sport is not the right way forward. Foul plays are everywhere! In cricket, in Football, in Polo!
You must watch the bull fight in Spain, they use to stab the bulls with swords until death and finally they tie the bull and drag them using horses.. That is barbaric, but not Jallikattu…PETA went to Spain, but Spain govt ridiculed them saying don’t interfere in our culture!
You need to understand that we love our bulls, and they are our children..If playing Jallikattu is barbaric, then PETA should ban all the slaughter houses, Zoos & circuses…
Stat- Last year they banned Jallikattu and sent 700 high breed Kaangeyan kaalais to slaughter house..

I agree completely with your last lines on how we should ban every activity involving animals, going by PETA’s analogy. Ban equestrian sports like polo too, because horse are bred only and only for entertainment. Likewise ban slaughter of pigs, chicken, lamb, fish farming because they are bred purely for human consumption. I know what happened with PETA in Spain and I agree bullfighting is actually very torturous for the bulls. But if Jallikattu can be monitored strictly, it should be allowed. Though in my opinion, ultimately any sport that uses or breeds animals or birds or aquatic animals purely and purely for entertainment should eventually be stopped. Using an animal for the sake of fun is just not right.

Oh girl you’re so sweet that you are pointing out fish farming too.this is a sport that’s involved with bulls not with cows.Bulls are strong enough to handle it.actually players are in high risk than bulls. There is lot of contradictions involved here.let’s hope for the best.

I do agree with your views about Jallikkattu. But I would like to express a difference of opinion about comparing a fisherman and soldier. Soldier is always Indian SOLDIER. He cant be called Punjabi or Tamilian! But may be if a fisherman from Punjab die, they may report surely Punjabi fisherman just as they report Tamil fisherman! Hope you will take my comment positively Dilip!

dear friend,
I agree with you. the north indian media is biased towards tamil nadu. be it the jallikattu issue or the sri lankan issue tamils’ rights have been neglected by them. they are happy to take our help and services regarding matters pertaining to national interest but when it comes to our issues they ignore our voices.
what is required in tamil nadu at this moment is the “emergence of a leader of the caliber of C.N. Annadurai, M.G.R, Jayalalitha” who can best represent tamil interests to the center.
